The Stranger, 2023
Acrylic on Paper, 12 in x 9 in
This painting was part of a master copy exercise demonstration that I conducted for a painting student of mine. Instead of choosing paintings by the great master painters of age, I encouraged my student to seek out paintings by more contemporary artists to copy. To lead, I chose to copy “The Stranger” by Hughie Lee-Smith and change some key figures of the painting. If you take a peek at Hughie Lee-Smith’s original painting, you’ll notice that I have removed the actual “stranger” from the painting all together along with all traces of the town behind him with the sole exception of the final remaining barn on the land.
